Disabled Facilities Grant

A Disabled facilities grant can help towards the cost of adapting a home to enable independent living.

What is the grant for?

Grants are available for many different adaptations including:

  • access such as concrete and modular ramps
  • level access showers
  • stair lifts or through floor lifts
  • ceiling track hoists
  • door widening
  • bedroom and bathroom extensions.

Am I eligible?

The grant is available if you:

  • own the property and are disabled
  • are a landlord and your tenant is disabled. You must also certify that the disabled occupant will live in the property as their only or main home for the grant condition period. This is currently 5 years.

How much will I get?

The grant is awarded based on financial circumstances. A full means test will be carried which looks at your average weekly income and savings above a certain limit.

There are certain benefits which are classed as 'passporting benefits' and will mean that you are exempt from a means test and there are other certain benefits that won’t be taken into account in the means test.

There are no financial checks for families of disabled children under 19.

How to apply

Nottinghamshire County Council carry out the assessment. They will decide on what work is needed to suit individual needs. There is information on their website about adapting your home. Contact Nottinghamshire County Council by:

  • telephone: 0300 500 8080.

They will then refer the person to us for the Disabled Facilities Grant.
