Hidden Valleys

Hidden Valleys is the name given to a lush undulating expanse of countryside north of Hucknall, much of which D. H. Lawrence referred to as “The country of my heart”. Many of his novels are based on the sites and families of the area.

The valleys consist of the villages of:

  • Jacksdale
  • Underwood
  • Bagthorpe
  • Lower Bagthorpe
  • Selston
  • Annesley
  • Ravenshead
  • Newstead
  • Linby
  • and Papplewick.

The area boasts miles of way-marked rural walks, cycle paths and bridleways with fascinating sites of natural, industrial and cultural heritage, nestled amongst wooded areas and open countryside.

Along the walks you will find Newstead Abbey, Felley PrioryAnnesley Old Church and several rural parish churches, each with their own fascinating tales to tell.

Way-marked walks range from 2.5 miles to 10 miles in length - downnload some from the local history and heritage page. There are several country pubs along the trails where you will receive a warm welcome at any time of the year.
