Ashfield District Council Marks White Ribbon Day 2022

White Ribbon Day is an annual awareness campaign that was celebrated on Thursday 25th November and aims to end male violence against women and girls.

It is one of the Council’s priorities, the authority endorses the White Ribbon mission to prevent violence against women and girls by creating awareness and providing support to survivors across Ashfield.

Ashfield District Council is holding information sessions across the District throughout the 16 days to highlight the support that can be offered to survivors of domestic abuse. The events will be supported by Nottinghamshire Police and Nottingham Independent Domestic Abuse Services (NIDAS).

The Council’s events will run from 10am – 2pm and will be held on:

• Tuesday 29th November at Tin Hat Centre, Matthew Holland Complex, Selston, NG16 6BW
• Thursday 1st December at Lammas Leisure Centre, Lammas Road, Sutton in Ashfield, NG17 2AD
• Monday 5th December at Under One Roof, Vine Terrace, Hucknall, NG15 7HN
• Wednesday 7th December at Vision West Notts College Derby Road Campus, Derby Road, Mansfield, NG18 5BH

Cllr Helen-Ann Smith, Executive Lead Member for Community Safety and Crime Reduction, said ‘We are proud to once again be an accredited advocate for White Ribbon Day and 16 Days Of Activism. The importance and impact it has on the people affected can’t be overlooked. We will work to inform, educate and stamp out unacceptable behaviours which have no place in society.”

Ashfield District Council has successfully secured £63,000 through the Safer Streets initiative, which will be spent on improving safety for women in Hucknall. The aim is to improve safety for women and young girls by installing new Safe Points Cameras with instant and direct access to police at the touch of a button. Local businesses are encouraged to support the initiative by signing up to be an Accredited 'Safe Spaces', which installs CCTV cameras and signage into businesses to informs the public where the Safe Spaces are located and to captures visual evidence should any instance acur. The scheme aims to discourage Anti Social behaviours towards women and to encourage community involvement and awareness. This also includes the wider installation of new High Definition CCTV cameras in Hucknall to reduce, tackle and discourage Anti-Social Behaviour toward women.

Cllr Sarah Madigan, Executive Lead Member for Customer Services and Stretigic Planning said, “We know that domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of gender. Please come and talk to us if you are worried about someone you know, or if you are being abused. Help and support is always available. We have dedicated Domestic Abuse Officer who is here to listen and provide any assistance that you need.”
