Sutton Lawn partied in the rain
Not even torrential rain could stop the party on Sutton Lawn for Ashfield Day.
Thousands of visitors showed true British spirit as they wrapped up in raincoats and wellies, armed with umbrellas and a positive attitude, to support Ashfield District Council’s event on Saturday 5 August.
Despite the classic summertime weather and mud, stall holders lined the central path through the park selling everything from home baked cookies to bags, wax melts, and bespoke Disney-inspired ears.
The main stage had a delayed start due to the excessive rain, meaning that the groups; Star and Stage, Empire Music School, Fortitude, and Grand Central Choir who were meant to perform, were unable to. The Council is looking into how it can showcase the talents of these groups who worked so hard to prepare for Ashfield Day. However, the extremely talented, local, young singers Breanna, and Ashley Westlake managed to entertain the crowd from the stage once the rain slowed.
The rain didn’t stop the funfair, or put off the visitors who enjoyed the rides, which featured adult and children’s rides. The fair also opened on the Sunday so people who couldn’t come on Saturday could experience a small part of Ashfield Day.
Plenty of food and drink were enjoyed throughout the day, and Chairman of Ashfield District Council, Cllr Dale Grounds even brought his alter-ego, Spiderman, out to the delight of the younger visitors.
The event closed with tributes to George Ezra, Taylor Swift, and ABBA on the main stage whose performances were enjoyed by hundreds of residents. The final act on the stage, Ibiza Nights, truly brought the party spirit to the lawn. The night ended with wet, but happy, visitors dancing in the mud to classic Ibiza anthems.
Cllr Chris Huskinson, Executive Lead Member for Leisure, Health and Wellbeing, said:
“It wasn’t the Ashfield Day we were all hoping for, but it was certainly memorable. It was a day we will all remember for years to come. I’d like to thank all the groups, artists, stall holders, volunteers, and Council staff who made Ashfield Day happen.
“We know that the community groups and performers were as disappointed as we were that they couldn’t perform but we will find somewhere for them to perform again for us. I am proud that so many residents put on a smile and joined us to support these local businesses and performers. We will be back next year, fingers crossed for better weather!”
