New Ashfield homes help slash rising energy bills

Future Council tenants will be able to keep their homes warm for less with new houses being built in Ashfield.

Ashfield District Council is taking measures to reduce the ever-rising household bills as it creates new homes across the District.

The Council is sharing its energy slashing measures as part of 2025 Big Energy Saving Week, from January 17 to 23.

This includes new homes in Adrian Sheldon View, Kirkby; Hardwick Lane and Brierly Road, Sutton; and Mill Close, Huthwaite.

The Council ensures that the U value, which is how the transfer of heat and cold through surfaces is measured for doors and windows, comes under the minimum required. This means the houses are more effective in retaining heat and subsequently less energy is used to keep the property warm.

This is achieved by using high-spec composite doors along with triple glazed windows.

All of the new properties are designed to have increased sized cavities which give the option to use different types of insulation in the build, minimizing air gaps and maximising heat retention.

This is alongside little details such as cavity trays to trap air and full-sized brick shaped vents for fans, rather than the traditional round tube, which means fans can be built into the brickwork.

The latest properties will also have mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems in place. These are designed to recycle exhaust from the flue using it to reheat the boiler rather than be released into the general environment. The boilers are hydrogen ready.

The average cost for a three-bed home in the UK for gas and electricity usage is £1,819.32.

The Council is helping to reduce the annual cost by adding PV panels into the roof of the homes. This can provide up to 30% of electricity for free and helping to make a significant saving on cost.

Cllr Jason Zadrozny, Leader of Ashfield District Council, said:

“Rising energy costs have hit everyone hard and many are struggling as the cost-of-living crisis continues. We want to help our residents as much as we can to reduce these extra costs.
“We are building new homes across the District and all of these have features to help reduce energy bills. This includes making sure that they retain as much heat as possible – especially at this time of year when we have seen temperatures fall below freezing.
“As a Council we are here to help. So if you are struggling please do get in touch and we can offer advice and support with your bills.”
