Disposal of upholstered items (POPs)

We now have to dispose of household upholstered items in a different way, due to the presence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). POPs are in textiles and foam used in upholstery.

Which items may contain POPs?

If any item of domestic seating is upholstered, we will have to assume that it contains POPs.

This includes:

  • Armchairs
  • Bean bags
  • Floor and sofa cushions
  • Futons
  • Home office chairs
  • Kitchen and dining room chairs
  • Sofas
  • Sofa beds
  • Stools and foot stools

These items can no longer be collected in normal bulky waste collections but have to be collected separately, but they are still included in the free bulky waste collections (if you are a qualifying household). If you have requested for several bulky items to be collected, the collections will be split between the non-upholstered and upholstered items.
