Rats, mice and moles

We can help you identify the pest in your home or garden and advise on how to prevent or treat infestations.

Rats

Rats in the Ashfield area are most likely to be the brown rat, also known as the common rat.

The adult common rat can grow to 30cm in length. It is usually brownish-grey on the back and grey underneath. Colour does vary and black forms have also been found.

The common rat can be found anywhere that offers food and shelter. This can include drains and sewers. They burrow into hedgerows, compost heaps and under garden sheds where they will make nests. They may also be attracted by build ups of rubbish.

If they get into houses, they can be found in the roof space, under floors and inside cavity walls. Rats are active all the time, but generally only heard at night when it’s quiet. They can be seen during the day searching for food.

Treatments for rats

Our treatment for rats starts at £78 for Ashfield residents. You can pay online for pest control appointments

You will receive up to three visits, though in most cases control is achieved within two visits. Controls are set up at the initial visit and then monitored, refreshed or removed at the second visit. If a third visit is needed all controls are removed at that point.

The pest controller will assess how the rats are accessing your property and advise you on prevention. This may include steps you can take to stop rats entering your property and how you can prevent your garden or land from supporting rat populations.

Mice

House mouse fur is usually brown on its body and grey on its underparts. The ears are large in relation to its body, whilst the tail is the same length as the head and body combined.

In this country, mice are found in a wide range of urban and rural buildings. Although mainly a house dweller, mice may live outdoors for part or all of the year. Inside mice may be found in kitchen cupboards, under floors, in roof spaces, in pipe or cable ducting or airing cupboards.

Controls are set up at the initial visit and then monitored, refreshed or removed at the second visit, if a third visit is necessary, all controls are then removed.

The treatment method is tailored to your individual mouse problem. The pest controller will assess how the mice are getting in and advise you how to prevent this.

Moles

Moles are silver-grey to black in colour, around 12cm to 15cm in length.

Their fur lies in either direction so that they can move forwards and backwards through their tunnels with ease. They have sensory hairs on their heads, forefeet and tail, which allows them to pick up information from vibrations in the ground. They have spade-like front feet which are used for digging and fully-formed eyes that can distinguish light and dark. Their ears are small but their hearing is very good and helps them to find food, sense predators and other moles. They are also good swimmers.

Moles are solitary by nature and live the majority of their lives in their tunnel system.
